Or Why I think the Cold War is good RPG inspiration
Yep, that’s me. I was there when the Wall fell. But you’re not here to listen to my old stories. It’s about some RPG ideas.
The Cold War is great inspiration for an RPG campaign. Let’s stick to the good old fantasy genre since it’s the most popular. You can have rival kingdoms, mages, guilds, cults, noble families etc. A full out war won’t serve anyone’s best interest. Instead these rival factions look for motley crew of individuals with “specialized skills” (You know Adventurers.) and maintain some level of plausible deniability. You have small groups undertaking dangerous quests to find a lost artifact, a powerful spell book, or whatever. Even rivalries can crop from the parties of adventurers.
This concept gives a reason for the adventurers to go delving but have a reason other than just fame and glory. Heck, they might not get either but at least they would be doing it for a cause. It also gives way to a wide range of types of adventures. Let your imagination run wild.
And with that. Roll Dice. Kill Monsters. Take Their Stuff. And Have Fun.
